Alberta Video Services Questions & Answers

    What is Alberta Video Services?

Alberta Education and Advanced Education and Technology have produced and/or acquired duplication rights for educational video programming for the Alberta educational community. These programs include titles produced by the ministries (for example the Biologix Series for Senior High Science and Biology courses) and in most cases, the rights are in perpetuity. They have also acquired current video programs authorized by Alberta Education for specific subjects and grades, programming reviewed by Alberta Teachers, and those acquired for the use of Alberta's post-secondary institutions. These programs are available from the LRC at a cost recovery price for duplication only. The average DVD will cost $16.00 with free shipping within Alberta, and eligible schools can apply the LRCA towards 25% of their purchases.

Can I apply my Learning Resources Credit Allocation (LRCA) when purchasing videos?

Yes as long as you still have funds available. The LRCA is a credit allocation administered by Alberta Education that assists eligible Alberta school authorities to enhance learning programs for Grade 1 - 12 students. Eligible schools can apply the LRCA towards 25% of their purchases' value at the LRC to a dollar maximum. For more information, click here.

There are a number of video programs that are identified as COAC Recommended, who or what is COAC?

The Alberta Video Co-Acquisition Consortium (COAC) is a partnership of Alberta school districts, learning/media resource centers, regional resource centres and Alberta Education. Together, they purchase provincial licenses for educational videos so that their member teachers and their students have access to more high quality video resources at a lower cost.

What does Authorization Status: COAC Recommended Curriculum Status: Alberta Teacher Reviewed mean?

Yearly over one hundred Alberta COAC member-teachers view and complete standardized evaluation forms on a wide variety of educational videos made available by leading Canadian media distributors. Only titles that are highly recommended by a minimum of four COAC teacher- members are initially short-listed. The short-listed titles undergo further scrutiny and a final list of video programs is tendered for provincial licenses. In this way, hundreds of timely learning resources have been obtained in a cost effective manner. The Alberta Video Co-Acquisition Video Consortium is committed to: Evaluating and selecting the best "curriculum fit" videos available

How do copyright expiry dates work?

The acquired titles are licensed for a specific term and will be available for sale at the LRC until the term expires. The copyright expiry date and the terms Non Erasure and Erasure will be included in the product information on the LRC website.

      • Non Erasure: rights are purchased for a specific time period; however, once the expiry date has been reached, the customer may retain the item in its collection for the life of the video. If the expiry date has passed when the video becomes damaged, it cannot be replaced through the LRC.
      • Erasure: Rights are purchased for a specific time period after which the video must be removed from the collection and destroyed.
      • In Perpetuity: These rights enable the customer to retain the item in its collection indefinitely, and they enable the customer to purchase replacement and added copies from the LRC indefinitely or until such time as the Ministries deem the resource outdated.

Be sure to note erasure dates and copyright expiry dates if you are considering purchasing a licensed video program from the LRC.

What do I do if the Closed Captioning does not work when I play my DVD?

Closed Captioning only works if it is built into the television function. With newer television sets, you can just hit mute and the closed captioning function will automatically activate. If it does not come on when you hit mute, you have to go into your menu settings and manually turn the closed caption function on.

Can I download print support PDFs (Teacher Guides, Blackline Masters etc.) from the LRC website?

Yes, any print support material provided in PDF format by the licencing distributor will be available to Alberta K-12 and post-secondary customers after you have logged on as a registered customer on the LRC website. You simply click on the Support Materials printer icon located on the details screen of the video program you are interested in to access the document.

Where can I find more about video streaming?

Can I order Alberta Video Services Resources (Videos and DVDs) on my Early Order Discount (EOD) order?

No, we can not combine Alberta Video Services Resources (Videos and DVDs) on your EOD order as these video programs have been acquired by the Ministries of Alberta Education and Advanced Education and Technology for duplication rights in Alberta and have specific license agreement terms that must be adhered to. To manage the license agreement terms and offer the best service to our educational customers we have had to institute the practice of ordering on demand, meaning we receive your order and we the order the duplication by the following day. This process does not fit into the EOD program of ordering January 1st - May 15th for September delivery.
